About this trip
A school trip to Bilbao is a four-day programme in the Basque Country for secondary school groups, staying with host families in Bilbao and Getxo. Viajes CumLaude organises it in Spain: we have run school tours from our Barcelona office since 1996, and your group works with a named trip manager here and a 24-hour duty phone.
The programme alternates heritage and modernity: the Siete Calles of the Casco Viejo, Santiago Cathedral and the Ribera Market tell the story of the trading city; the Guggenheim, the Zubizuri footbridge and the Artxanda funicular reveal the reinvented metropolis. A day on the coast includes crossing the UNESCO-listed Vizcaya Bridge and discovering Algorta's old port and Ereaga beach in Getxo.
Hands-on activities complete the trip: an introduction to Basque pelota, a visit to San Mamés stadium and supervised free time in the Ensanche. Distances are short, the metro connects Bilbao directly with Getxo, and the pace is designed for school groups, returning to host families every evening.

You will begin with a guided visit of the Casco Viejo: the Siete Calles, Santiago Cathedral and Plaza Nueva, the historic heart of the city. The Ribera Market, one of Europe's largest covered markets, completes the morning. In the afternoon, a clue-solving game through the old town lets the group explore actively, before settling in with host families at the end of the day.

The morning is devoted to the Guggenheim Museum: Frank Gehry's architecture, Puppy and the contemporary art collections, with a route adapted to the group's level. You will then walk along the ría to the Zubizuri footbridge, designed by Santiago Calatrava. In the afternoon, the Artxanda funicular takes the group to the best viewpoint over the city, to grasp Bilbao's transformation at a glance.

The metro takes the group to Getxo, on the right bank of the ría. You will cross the Vizcaya Bridge, the world's oldest transporter bridge and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The day continues at Algorta's old port, with its colourful fishermen's houses, and a walk to Ereaga beach, with supervised free time before returning to the host families.

You will visit San Mamés stadium, 'the Cathedral' of Athletic Club, with its museum and behind-the-scenes areas. An introduction to Basque pelota follows, to discover the Basque Country's emblematic sport. After some final free time around Azkuna Zentroa, the former wine warehouse redesigned by Philippe Starck, the group sets off on the journey home.
