About this trip

A school trip to Santander offers students a balanced introduction to northern Spain, combining coastal landscapes, cultural visits, and daily life in an accessible and structured way. The city sits between the Atlantic and green hills, creating a calm environment where a group can explore safely and progressively. The Cabo Mayor Lighthouse, La Magdalena Royal Palace, and the Maritime Museum help students understand the city’s long-standing relationship with the sea and the development of the region. The historic centre provides context for understanding urban growth, while the street art tour opens a window into contemporary culture and how public spaces shape artistic expression. The visit to the Altamira Museum introduces prehistoric art in a clear, student-friendly format, and Comillas allows groups to discover modernist architecture, including Gaudí’s Caprice. A full day in Bilbao adds a modern cultural dimension, from the Guggenheim’s surroundings to its market life and local food traditions. The pintxos workshop and introduction to Basque Pelota encourage students to participate actively and understand regional identity. Accommodation with host families gives a simple, everyday insight into local customs and routines. Highlights: Host family accommodation Coastal scenery: Cabo Mayor and Santander Bay La Magdalena Royal Palace and Maritime Museum Guided Street Art tour Visit and tasting at a sobaos and quesadas bakery Altamira Museum and replica cave Comillas: Sobrellano Palace, Pontifical University, beaches Guided visit to Gaudí’s Caprice Full day in Bilbao: historic centre, Guggenheim exterior, suspension bridge, market Pintxos workshop and introduction to Basque Pelota

Public transport

Getting around Santander

Santander is compact in the centre and lovely to explore on foot, but the TUS is key for linking the Jardines de Pereda, Puertochico, La Magdalena, the Sardinero, Valdenoja and the Cabo Mayor area. For groups, alternate the seafront walk with the bus on the centre-coast hops.

Transport networks

TUS centre - Magdalena - Sardinero

Urban bus corridor via Correos, the Jardines de Pereda, Puertochico, Castelar, Reina Victoria, La Magdalena, the Plaza de Italia, the Sardinero and Valdenoja.

Useful lines

123LCN1

In your itinerary

Day 1: main support for moving from the old town and the Centro Botín to La Magdalena, the Sardinero and the approach to Cabo Mayor.

TUS Sardinero - Cueto - Universidad

Lines reinforcing the Sardinero, Los Castros, university, Cueto and northern neighbourhoods axis. Useful if the group extends the walk towards Mataleñas or Cabo Mayor.

Useful lines

7C17C213E1E31

In your itinerary

Day 1: alternatives for the Sardinero, the UIMP/university and the approaches to Cueto. For the Cabo Mayor lighthouse you usually walk the final stretch from Valdenoja or the Cueto area.

TUS stations and centre

Connections between the stations, the town hall, Correos, the Jardines de Pereda, Castilla and the entry routes. Handy for arrivals by train or coach.

Useful lines

41724C124C2N3

In your itinerary

Day 1: use it for entry/exit if the group arrives via the Plaza de las Estaciones or needs to get back to the coach without crossing the whole centre on foot.

Urban mechanical routes

Santander has a funicular, ramps and escalators that help bridge the slopes between the waterfront and the upper streets.

Useful lines

FunicularRampsEscalators

In your itinerary

Day 1: useful for avoiding long climbs after the cathedral, the town hall or the Jardines de Pereda, especially with rain or tired legs.

TUS standard ticket

Single ticket bought on board. Not the most efficient option if the group will do several centre-coast hops.

Rechargeable standard card

Recommended

0,66 EUR / trip; minimum top-up 6,00 EUR; non-personalised card 1,00 EUR

Carnet trimestral joven TUS

Pass for young people up to 25. Only worthwhile for long stays or academic programmes, not for a short visit.

51,00 EUR / quarter

Tips for the group

  • The centre, the cathedral, the Jardines de Pereda and the Centro Botín work well on foot; save the bus for La Magdalena, the Sardinero and Cabo Mayor.
  • For Cabo Mayor, allow for the final stretch on foot from Valdenoja/Cueto, or consider coach/taxi if time is tight.
  • The rechargeable card pays off over several trips; buy and top it up before boarding to avoid delaying the group.
  • On-board payment has a banknote limit; carry change or a card for single tickets.
  • Use the TUS app/website for waiting times and the journey planner; Google Maps does not always reflect the full urban network.
  • Check TUS service notices before moving large groups to the Sardinero or the centre, especially with sports events or road closures.
